Feature Request: Fall / Posture Detection as an Extension of Person Detection

Hi everyone,

Would it be possible to add fall or posture detection capabilities on top of Frigate’s existing person detection framework?

I’ve explored various mmWave radar–based fall detection solutions, and while they are promising, they come with certain limitations:

• Restricted coverage areas that don’t always fit larger rooms.

• Lack of flexible zoning (for example, excluding specific areas like a bed).

• Inability to simultaneously handle both presence detection and fall detection within the same device or configuration.

Integrating a software-based fall detection system into Frigate—leveraging existing video feeds and posture inference—could be far more versatile and scalable.

I’d be happy to contribute development effort toward this, provided I can get some guidance on where and how to start building this feature within the existing Frigate framework.

The motivation behind this request is personal. My mother suffers from vertigo, and she recently had a serious fall that required surgery. Having a fall/posture detection feature within Frigate would provide an invaluable safety mechanism—alerting family members or caregivers if a similar incident occurs while she’s alone.

Generally, a mmWave device will perform better than anything Frigate could implement with any kind of model.

i am going to try out the C1001 module. however, I do see a few challenges with those like

• limited coverage - typically 2m radius.
• limited / No zone support.
• Fall from bed vs fall from standing position ?
• Interference from fans since needing ceiling mount.

These are the main reasons for exploring an alternate. If anyone else on this forum has experimented with mmwave or anything else for fall detection, would love to hear their experiences / recommendations.
