How does the setting java.diagnostic.filter work?

I have found this #3723 of @rgrunber, but I can't figure out how it works from the little documentation in the changelog and on the setting.

I want to exclude all files in "target/openapi" from coming up in the problems view, so I added

    "java.diagnostic.filter": [
        "target/openapi/**"
    ]

My problems view does not change. What do I do wrong?
