fix(core): allow configuring the network for the Ryuk container - #12154
In some environments (rootless Podman, VSCode devcontainers, setups where the default network is restricted), the Ryuk container cannot reach the containers it is supposed to clean up, because those containers run in custom networks while Ryuk always starts on the default network. The current workaround is to disable Ryuk entirely.
What this PR adds
A new opt-in configuration property, ryuk.container.network (following the existing ryuk.container.* convention):
Unset (default): behavior is completely unchanged — Ryuk keeps starting on the default network as before.
Set: the Ryuk container is attached to the given pre-existing network (as its network mode) instead of the default one, so Ryuk can see and clean up containers running in that network.
A custom published port for Ryuk (also mentioned in the issue) is intentionally left out of this change to keep it minimal; it can be added separately if there is demand.
RyukContainer applies withNetworkMode(network) before the container is created when the property is set. The connection from the test JVM to Ryuk keeps working through the already published port (getHost() + mapped port), so nothing changes there.
Testing
RyukContainerTest (new, unit-level, does not start Ryuk or require Docker): the configured network is applied before the container is started, and no network mode is set by default.
TestcontainersConfigurationTest: property is absent by default and readable from user properties and environment variables.
Ryuk now uses the configured network mode when ryuk.container.network is set. The setting can come from user properties or the corresponding environment variable. When unset, Ryuk’s network mode remains unset.
Ryuk uses the configured network mode when present. Tests cover the configured and default cases. The configuration documentation describes the setting and gives rootless Podman and devcontainers as examples.
Handle or explicitly reject host networking before merging: it can fail the first container start and leave later containers without Ryuk cleanup. Correct the misleading networking guidance as well. Default networking is unchanged.

Explanation
The PR changes four code and documentation areas, and each relates to the network objective of #8167. RyukContainer.java adds the network mode guard. TestcontainersConfiguration.java adds getRyukNetwork(). RyukContainerTest.java and TestcontainersConfigurationTest.java cover the new behavior. docs/features/configuration.md documents ryuk.container.network. The supplied summary lists no unrelated files. The reviewed RyukContainer.java at head matches the summary. Whole-PR text diffs could not be read because changed blobs were unavailable in the checkout. The out-of-scope verdict depends on the supplied summary and the head file read.

Explanation
Issue #8167 has two coding requests in its Proposal: (1) a custom network name for the Ryuk container, and (2) a custom exposed port for Ryuk, both set through a custom variable. The title and synopsis focus on the network.
Network request (met): The PR adds the opt-in property ryuk.container.network. TestcontainersConfiguration.getRyukNetwork() reads it from user properties, classpath properties, or TESTCONTAINERS_RYUK_CONTAINER_NETWORK. At the reviewed head, RyukContainer() calls withNetworkMode(network) when the value is non-null. When unset, no network mode is set, so default behavior is unchanged. Unit tests in RyukContainerTest and TestcontainersConfigurationTest cover the default and the configured values.
Port request (not met): No Ryuk port configuration exists in the reviewed change. RyukContainer still uses withExposedPorts(8080) with no configurable port. The PR description states that the port is intentionally excluded. The PR cannot remove a requirement from the linked issue by deferring it. No evidence in the supplied material shows that maintainers narrowed the issue scope to exclude the port.
Resolution
Either add a coding change that makes the Ryuk exposed port configurable (for example, a ryuk.container.port property read by TestcontainersConfiguration and applied in RyukContainer), with unit tests for its default and configured values. Or obtain documented maintainer agreement that issue #8167 is narrowed to the network request only, and link that agreement to the issue or PR.

Add a test for the classpath source of ryuk.container.network.
getRyukNetwork() reads ryuk.container.network through getEnvVarOrProperty, which includes classpath properties. None of the three new tests sets this key in classpath properties. A change to getEnvVarOrUserProperty would still pass all three tests while dropping the documented testcontainers.properties source. The suggested test covers that path and uses the existing classpathProperties field.

RyukContainerTest checks only getNetworkMode(). No test in the src/test trees starts RyukContainer with a configured network. The ryukContainer.getFirstMappedPort() call in RyukResourceReaper.maybeStart() therefore runs untested on that path. A regression that stops the reaper from connecting on a custom network would not fail these tests.
Add a test that starts Ryuk on an existing configured network and checks that the reaper can read a mapped port. Asserting the stored network mode does not cover this startup path.

This is a test-coverage gap for behavior that works today. It does not show a production defect.

Handle host network mode before the Ryuk mapped-port lookup.
With ryuk.container.network=host, Docker ignores port publishing. getFirstMappedPort() then throws IllegalArgumentException. That failure stops the first non-reused container start. Later containers register without Ryuk cleanup. Handle host in RyukResourceReaper, or reject it with a clear error in RyukContainer.

Remove the inaccurate reachability claim from the ryuk.container.network docs.
The new paragraph says Ryuk cannot otherwise reach containers on custom networks. Ryuk cleans up containers through the mounted Docker socket, not through direct connections to target containers. The setting does not address a reachability problem that the reaper has. Remove the "Useful in ..." sentence so users do not change the network for a problem that does not exist.
