I'm a Backend Software Engineer based in the UK, building and maintaining production systems primarily in Python.
I enjoy designing reliable software end-to-end - from API contracts and database design through to deployment, observability, and long-term maintainability. Most of my day-to-day work involves turning business requirements into robust systems that can evolve safely over time.
Working across distributed systems and production engineering with:
- Python (FastAPI)
- PostgreSQL + SQLAlchemy
- Event-driven architecture (GCP Pub/Sub)
- Docker + Kubernetes
- CI/CD with GitHub Actions
- Infrastructure and deployment workflows
I particularly enjoy:
- API design and service boundaries
- Async workflows and event-driven systems
- Defensive testing and safe schema evolution
- Reliability, monitoring, and production troubleshooting
- Building tooling that removes manual processes
- Distributed system trade-offs
- Reliability engineering and observability
- Typed Python and maintainable architecture
- Designing systems that stay simple as they scale
Before moving into software engineering, I spent 14+ years in education and leadership roles, including Assistant Head Teacher and Data Coach positions.
That experience shaped how I work today - collaborative, pragmatic, and focused on helping teams make progress. I still enjoy mentoring aspiring developers and supporting people as they grow their technical confidence.
Always happy to connect and chat about backend engineering, systems design, or building useful things.
