Hey, I'm Juampi from the Firecrawl team. Thanks for VoltAgent and for keeping the examples folder open to integrations. This PR adds a small Firecrawl example.

Bugs / Features

What is the current behavior?

There is no Firecrawl example in examples/.

What is the new behavior?

examples/with-firecrawl-search is a research agent with two tools:

  • firecrawlSearch searches the web and returns titles, URLs and descriptions. It can also return each result's page as Markdown in the same call (scrapeContent: true).
  • firecrawlScrape fetches any URL as clean Markdown.

The agent searches first, reads the one or two most relevant pages when the descriptions are not enough, and cites the URLs it used. It follows the layout of the other web search example, uses fetch against the Firecrawl v2 API (no new dependencies), and adds one line to examples/README.md plus the lockfile importer entry for the new package.

Notes for reviewers

How I tested it, with gpt-4o-mini against the published @voltagent/* packages, calling POST /agents/Web%20Research%20Agent/text:

  1. "What is the current Node.js LTS release line and when does it reach end of life? Cite your sources." The agent called firecrawlSearch, then firecrawlScrape on two of the results, and answered with Node.js 24 and 22 and their end-of-life dates, citing both pages.
  2. "Give me three links to introductions to the Model Context Protocol, with one sentence on what each covers." The agent called firecrawlSearch only and answered with three cited links.

I also called both tools directly with scrapeContent: true, a missing key, an invalid key (401) and an invalid URL (400). Each error returns a { success: false, error, message } result instead of throwing. tsc (the example's build script), biome check examples/with-firecrawl-search and Prettier on both READMEs pass. No changeset, since examples are not published.

If a recipe page on voltagent.dev would help, I'm happy to write one.

Summary by cubic

Adds examples/with-firecrawl-search, a research agent that searches the web and reads pages as clean Markdown with Firecrawl.

  • Provides two tools: firecrawlSearch returns titles, URLs, and descriptions with optional Markdown, and firecrawlScrape fetches any URL as Markdown.
  • Uses fetch against the Firecrawl v2 API with no new dependencies, serializing request bodies with safeStringify.
  • Applies a 120-second request timeout and keeps page content context-safe by truncating long output, configurable via constants in src/tools.ts.
  • Returns structured { success: false, error, message } results on API errors instead of throwing, and surfaces invalid JSON responses as errors.
  • Uses NodeNext module resolution with .js import paths for Node ESM compatibility.
  • Adds the example to examples/README.md and registers it in the lockfile.

Written for commit 4770d22. Summary will update on new commits.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4770d

The new example may not start when users follow its setup instructions on a clean checkout. Add the workspace build prerequisite or otherwise ensure those dependencies are built before startup; this should be corrected or explicitly accepted before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c1820

The example exposes paid search and scraping capabilities without configuring request authentication, while the server listens on all interfaces by default. Callers who can reach it can consume the configured account’s resources. Private network restrictions could reduce exposure, but those restrictions are not established here.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new example attaches process-owned Firecrawl authority to a server with no configured request authentication and an all-interface bind default. A caller able to reach the listener can submit research requests that invoke the tools using the configured account, creating unauthorized resource-consumption exposure. These server defaults predate the PR, but this example introduces the Firecrawl capability behind them; deployment-level containment is unknown.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported resource-abuse scope is the reachable example process and its configured Firecrawl account, including available credits and service capacity. The bearer credential is sent to the fixed provider endpoint, while the requested scrape URL is a body field. Consequently, host-network SSRF or credential delivery to the scraped site is not established by this flow; provider-side destination controls remain unknown.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A network caller who can reach the default listener can submit an unauthenticated research request, cause registered tools to execute, and consume the environment’s provider authority. Repeated requests are not bounded by the tool’s per-call result limit or timeout. This exposure arises from adding the new capability behind existing server defaults, not from changing those defaults.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-to-server authentication is not configured, while server-to-Firecrawl authentication uses an environment bearer key. A missing key prevents provider calls. The scrape URL receives string-type validation only, and provider content enters the research workflow without an enforced search-result provenance requirement. This is a boundary description, not proof of provider-side SSRF or a successful content-driven attack.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The tools have no local reservation or multi-step mutation to roll back, and failures terminate locally with structured results. Their fetch signal uses only the local timeout rather than the caller’s cancellation context. Remote completion, cancellation, and charging after an aborted fetch are unverified; repetition can issue another independent provider request. Shared-memory concurrency and recovery guarantees are also unresolved, not established vulnerabilities.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make the example explicitly local-only through a loopback bind, or configure request authentication before wider exposure. For shared deployments, enforce caller-specific usage and concurrency budgets, establish authenticated conversation ownership, and propagate cancellation into provider requests without assuming that client abort refunds or terminates remote work.

responses so existing HTTP status error handling is preserved.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Build the workspace packages before starting the example.

The README runs pnpm dev immediately after pnpm install. The example imports workspace packages whose ESM exports target generated dist files. Installation does not build those packages, so tsx watch --env-file=.env ./src can fail with a missing-module error.

Suggested fix
    pnpm install
    ```
+   Build the linked VoltAgent packages:
+
+   ```bash
+   pnpm --filter '@voltagent/*' build
+   ```
+
 2. **Configure environment variables**:
<repository_evidence>
The documented sequence runs pnpm install and then pnpm dev.
The example's dev script is tsx watch --env-file=.env ./src, and its source imports @voltagent/core, @voltagent/internal, @voltagent/libsql, @voltagent/logger, and @voltagent/server-hono.
The imported workspace packages map ESM imports to generated dist files such as ./dist/index.mjs and ./dist/main/index.mjs.
The root manifest defines build separately as lerna run build and defines prepare only as husky install.
The linked packages define build and dev scripts but no prepare, install, or postinstall build hook.
The reviewed checkout contains no tracked dist entries for the inspected linked packages.
The lockfile links the example dependencies to the local workspace package directories.
tsx can transpile imported TypeScript dependencies, but package exports still select the dependency's declared entry point.
In a clean checkout, the workspace links resolve these imports through their dist export targets, and the documented install sequence does not create those files. The example can therefore fail before startup.
