The flux-2-klein-4b-Q4_0 GGUF stores its tensor names without the leading "model.diffusion_model." prefix that sd-cli's version detection and model builders expect, so loading it failed with "get sd version from file failed" and later "tensor ... not in model metadata".

  • model_loader.cpp: detect Flux/Flux2 by model signature with or without the prefix, so get_sd_version() no longer returns VERSION_COUNT.
  • diffusion_engine.cpp: detect an unprefixed Flux GGUF at load and apply the "model.diffusion_model." prefix so tensor lookups match.
  • ggml_block.hpp: drop the GGML_ASSERT requiring weight_scale element count of 1 or out_features; some Qwen3-4b-based encoders store a per-group scale (out_features * group_factor), and the dequant path already handles any count.

Smoke test (steps=20, guidance=4, 512x512) produces a valid PNG output.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The model loader recognizes additional unprefixed Flux and Flux2 tensor names. GGUF inspection selects a prefix for qualifying Flux files before loading. Linear::init_params accepts weight_scale tensors with storage-provided element counts without restricting them to one or out_features.

Merge Risk | 🔵 Low · up to 98de9

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 98de9

The change adds support for Flux GGUF files whose tensor names lack the usual prefix. However, the broadened name checks can match tensors from other model families, which could cause some non-Flux models to be detected as Flux. Anchoring these checks is a small fix and is recommended before merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 98de9

The change removes a size restriction on file-provided scale tensors without establishing that downstream calculations support every newly accepted layout or reject unsupported layouts safely. Existing loading checks provide some containment. No memory corruption or privilege escalation has been demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The shared initializer now admits scale counts beyond scalar and per-output-feature layouts without an established downstream acceptance or safe-rejection contract. File-controlled counts can reach native compute operations across Linear callers, not only the intended checkpoint. Loader shape checks constrain copying but do not resolve this computation-boundary validation gap; memory-safety impact remains unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced exposure is the process loading and executing a checkpoint whose scale metadata an attacker can influence. Because the change is in shared Linear initialization, it is not restricted to one checkpoint family. Service, tenant, credential, and host-level consequences cannot be established from the available consumer and deployment evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A conditional attack path is file-controlled scale cardinality entering initialization and reaching native multiplication with a newly accepted layout. The source establishes this reachability, not unsafe indexing or exploitation. Safe rejection versus memory-safety impact remains unresolved because the consumer implementations are missing.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Prefix inference changes tensor namespace handling through the existing GGUF reader and loader. Existing loader controls still avoid adding an already-present prefix and reject duplicate tensor names. These are catalog-consistency controls, not proof that file-provided computational layouts are safe.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The base assertion already terminated initialization for unsupported scale counts, and the upstream-GGML INT8 unsupported-operation exception is unchanged. Neither is evidence of a newly introduced denial of service. The material uncertainty is whether newly reachable consumer states preserve safe failure containment.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define accepted scale layouts separately for each execution path and validate against the actual consumer contract before dispatch. Unsupported layouts should produce a controlled loading failure rather than relying on undocumented broadcasting or kernel behavior.

Do not open model files twice, and restrict the prefix probe to GGUF files.

get_flux_model_prefix calls read_gguf_file on every model_path, including safetensors and other non-GGUF formats. For those files the call fails and returns an empty prefix. The loader then parses the file a second time. For a GGUF file, the probe parses the header and tensor table once, and init_from_file repeats that parse. This doubles the work and, for non-GGUF files, can emit misleading read errors if read_gguf_file logs on failure. Check the file extension or magic before probing. Consider moving the prefix decision into ModelLoader::init_from_gguf_file so the file is read once.

The bare substring match can classify tensor names from other model families as Flux. find("double_blocks.") also matches prefixed names such as hunyuan_double_blocks. or other names that are not rooted at double_blocks.. Restrict the unprefixed checks to tensor names that start with double_blocks. or single_transformer_blocks..

Narrow the Flux marker and reuse the prefix constant.

The marker double_stream_modulation_img is used by the Flux implementation and does not distinguish Flux2 from Flux1. Use the tensor-name prefixes already used by model detection: double_blocks. and single_transformer_blocks.. Match these prefixes with starts_with, and define "model.diffusion_model." as a shared constant.

Thanks for the PR!

The issue is caused by using -m / --model instead of --diffusion-model.

--model is intended for full model checkpoints, while --diffusion-model is intended for standalone diffusion models. The latter already handles the model.diffusion_model. prefix internally, so the GGUF tensor names do not need to include it.

Please use --diffusion-model to load this checkpoint. No code changes are needed for the reported issue.

Closing this PR.
