Problem

Reading a PDF in the file preview, switching to another thread and coming back opens the PDF at page 1 again. Leaving a thread unmounts its preview, and the PDF viewer kept its page, scroll and zoom only in component state.

Change

The built-in PDF viewer now remembers where each document was left and restores it when it mounts again: the page, the offset within that page, the zoom and the measured page heights. The heights matter for PDFs with mixed page sizes, where estimated offsets would otherwise land on the wrong page. Positions live in a module-level map capped at 50 documents, dropping the least recently viewed first.

Positions are keyed by the preview's existing document key, so an edited PDF still opens fresh. Chat attachment PDFs now key on their attachment id, because each mount signs a new URL.

This works with #23732 and the two don't conflict. That PR stops the agent's replies from reloading the PDF and keys workspace PDFs on the file's revision. With it merged, a position also survives the agent working in the thread while you are away. Without it, the key carries the workspace revision, so the position is only restored when nothing ran in the thread meanwhile.

Not changed:

  • Browsers that render PDFs with their own viewer (Chrome, Firefox and Safari on desktop web) show the PDF in a plugin frame whose page can't be read, so they still reset. The desktop app and iOS web use the built-in viewer and are fixed.
  • Mobile uses native PDF components, a separate code path.
  • HTML previews run in sandboxed cross-origin frames, so their scroll can't be read either.

Scope and approval

Closes #24463

Verification

  • Added a browser test: zoom in and go to page 3 of a mixed-height PDF, remount the viewer, and it reopens on page 3 at the same zoom. A different document key opens on page 1 at fit width.
  • Web typecheck and lint on the touched files pass.
  • I couldn't run the browser tests locally because the test host's Chromium is missing system libraries, so CI is the first run of the new test. I didn't test this by hand in the app.

PR filed by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code through T3 Code.

Leaving a thread unmounts its PDF preview, so coming back opened the PDF
at page 1. The pdf.js viewer now remembers the page, scroll offset, zoom
and measured page heights for its last 50 documents and restores them on
remount. Attachment PDFs key on their attachment id instead of the signed
URL, which changes on every mount.

Closes pingdotgg#24463

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This is a contained PDF-preview fix that persists page, offset, zoom, and mixed-page-size measurements across thread switches, with a focused browser test and bounded in-memory storage. Human review is warranted because the implementation also adds two line-level lint suppressions for the new effects.

Walkthrough

PDF previews now pass a document identity to PdfViewer. The viewer stores reading position and zoom by identity, then restores that state when the same document is mounted again. A browser test checks restoration for the same key and a fresh start for a different key.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: the built-in PDF preview keeps its page across thread switches. It follows the conventional commit form and matches the raw summary (position restore via a module-level map keyed by document) and the linked objective (#24463).

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #24463 requires the built-in PDF viewer to restore the previous page and scroll position after a conversation switch. The whole-PR diff (merge base to head) adds a module-level positions map in apps/web/src/components/files/PdfViewer.tsx, capped at MAX_POSITIONS = 50. It stores page, within-page offset, width, zoom, and page ratios. A useLayoutEffect on [pdf] calls restorePosition, which scrolls to the saved page and offset. The scroll handler and the zoom layout effect call savePosition. BrowserDocumentFrame.tsx passes key (documentKey ?? src) as positionKey through PdfDocument to PdfViewer. The base and head versions of BrowserDocumentFrame.tsx show that the key expression is unchanged. The only change is threading positionKey. AttachmentFilePreview.tsx supplies stable keys for the remount path. The added browser test covers remount restoration (page 3, same zoom, mixed-height PDF) and a new-key reset. Test execution is unverified, and the issue does not require a test. The code path satisfies the conversation-switch requirement. Limits: the PR excludes the browser-native PDF plugin frame, mobile native components, and HTML previews. The issue names the built-in viewer as its scope, so these exclusions do not fail #24463. Workspace PDFs whose revision changes during the absence are addressed by #23732, not by this objective.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR changes in PdfViewer.tsx cover position persistence, bounded eviction, restore, record, and the positionKey prop. They support #24463. The AttachmentFilePreview.tsx changes add Blob-based keys and environmentId:attachmentId keys for PDF previews. These keys keep the position key stable across remounts when signed URLs renew, so they support the same objective. BrowserDocumentFrame.tsx changes only thread positionKey into PdfDocument. The documentKey ?? src key for HTML render and generic file frames exists in the base version, so the HTML and file behavior is unchanged. The test file covers the new behavior. The native plugin frame, mobile path, and sandboxed HTML frame are not changed for position restoration. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template sections (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification). The problem and change are clearly explained, and the description lists what is not changed. Two gaps remain. The Scope and approval section links #24463 but does not show a maintainer-approved direction or scope comment, and it does not say why the change qualifies without one. The Verification section does not include UI before/after screenshots or a recording, which the template requires for UI changes. The description also omits the agent model and harness line; the author does name Claude Opus 5.5 and T3 Code at the end, so that line is present in substance.

Resolution

Add a maintainer-approved reference for scope in the Scope and approval section. Link the triaged issue #24463 with the approval comment, or explain why this small fix of an obvious bug needs no prior approval. For this UI change, add before/after screenshots or a short recording of the PDF page reset and its fix, and upload them to GitHub with links or embeds. Confirm the agent model and harness line matches the template format.

Use classes for the test wrapper’s static styles.

Replace the static display, height, and width inline values with classes, such as flex h-[600px] w-[320px]. As per coding guidelines, “No style={{ ... }} or inline <style> for static values a class covers.” The Web UI path instructions also say to avoid inline styles for static values.

Add a within-page scroll-offset assertion to the remount test.

The test only checks the page indicator, the zoom label, and the "Fit width" label. A remount that restores only the page and zoom would pass it. The issue asks for the previous scroll position, but the test never scrolls within a page and never asserts a scroll offset after remount. Restoration of the within-page offset therefore has no regression coverage. The mixed-height fixture does exercise page-top offsets for page 3, but it does not cover offsets inside a page.

A safe patch needs the scroll container and its scroll state, which were not inspected. Add the scroll action and assertion after the page-3 remount check, using that container.

A draft PDF preview keyed its position on a fresh object URL, so reopening
it started at page 1, and finishing the upload switched the key to the
attachment id and reloaded the PDF. Drafts now key on their Blob identity.
The remount test also checks the scroll offset within a page.

Invalidate workspace PDF URLs when the checkout changes.

In local mode without an active worktree, branch switching runs git checkout in the same project directory. The checkout can replace the PDF bytes, but deriveWorkspaceMutationId does not include the branch or checkout state, so its value can remain unchanged. WorkspaceBrowserPreview then reuses the same URL, and the asset route permits that URL to remain cached for one hour. Include the checkout/ref revision in the workspace revision passed to both the URL and useAssetUrlState. This is separate from the BrowserDocumentFrame/PdfDocument reload issue.

Assert scroll offsets through vi.waitFor.

Both assertions read scrollTop directly with expect. Wrap each assertion in vi.waitFor so it follows the browser-test rule. As per coding guidelines, “Browser tests assert through expect.element or vi.waitFor.”

Give resource PDFs a stable document key.

When props.asset contains a media-file or draft-workspace-file resource, this branch leaves documentKey undefined. If a remount receives a new asset URL, BrowserDocumentFrame uses that URL as the position key. The PDF then reopens at page 1. Derive a key from the resource identity and its revision so URL renewal preserves position without treating changed file contents as the same document. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve horizontal scroll when saving a position.

If a zoomed page is wider than the viewer, a reader can scroll horizontally. savePosition records only the vertical offset, so remounting restores the page and zoom but resets the horizontal position. Save node.scrollLeft and apply it in restorePosition. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Written by gpt-6.1-sol on behalf of Maria

thanks @ashx-j. kept your bounded position cache, measured page geometry, and stable blob/attachment identities, with your commits intact. merged current main and resolved the conflicts while keeping its pdf search and word-wrap changes.

fixed a restoration race that lost the within-page offset: positions now read the actual scroll element, and restoration runs before recording the new layout. reserved the scrollbar gutter after reproducing fit-width drift from 1389 to 1400 pixels; it now stays at 1389. moved the test into the existing pdf viewer test file and reused its mixed-size fixture. the final diff is 4 files, 145 additions and 13 deletions, versus the original 155 additions and 7 deletions.

verification at 2dc23b94d756d62cd71ca045516a132ab41e36fe:

  • blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip checks, affected typechecks, 134 browser tests, and 3 react compiler cases. the remount regression test failed on main first.
  • real app in system chrome, using the supported built-in pdf fallback: main reset the same document to page 1 at fit width; this head preserved page 3, 148% zoom and scrollTop 1657 after switching threads. fit width also passed with normal, space-taking scrollbars. checked a smaller dark viewport. a draft pdf also kept page 2 and scrollTop 478 after closing and reopening its preview.
  • ci is green: 21 passed and 8 skipped checks. github reports CLEAN and MERGEABLE. both independent source reviewers approved this head.

review follow-up: the resource-key finding does not apply to a reachable pdf path. FilePreviewPanel.tsx sets renderBrowserFile = isPdf || ... and routes pdfs through WorkspaceBrowserPreview before the resource-backed AttachmentFilePreview branch. that preview already supplies environment, thread, path and workspace revision as its document key. composer pdfs use the blob key, and chat attachments use the attachment id.

known minor limit: horizontal scroll resets after remount. the minor horizontal-scroll finding is deferred with this limit recorded. this retains the original page, vertical offset and zoom scope. native browser pdf plugins and native mobile remain outside this fix; the electron shell itself is unverified. human approval and merge remain with maria.

main after returning to the thread: page 1 at fit width

this head after returning: page 3 at 148% zoom

thread switch restores page 3 and zoom; loading pause trimmed, no timing claim
