Doing this is going to break core functionality for a bunch of our users, why can't we instead include the workaround in the package until it's fixed upstream? Is there some incompatibility to using the "old mode"?

I think we would be better off waiting for a fix from upstream, since it is a known issue. If that doesn't happen soon, then a workaround would be a good idea imo.
