Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a 72×40 OLED dashboard with a boot splash showing the device’s network address or mDNS name, plus effect details, brightness, speed, intensity, and a scrolling brightness history.
The display blanks after a configurable period of inactivity and wakes on button presses, settings changes, or state changes.
An optional LED indicates network status by blinking when disconnected and pulsing when connected.
Supports display flipping and adjustable positioning.
Documentation
Added setup guidance covering hardware requirements, configuration, and build instructions.
Chores
Added packaging configuration for the OLED usermod.
Port of the OLED 72x40 usermod from PR wled#5335 (originally targeting
0_15_x) to the v0.16.x main branch. Addresses all review feedback
from softhack007:
- Use WLED global I2C pins instead of hardcoded SDA/SCL
- Remove WiFi.setTxPower() workaround (use -DLOLIN_WIFI_FIX instead)
- Replace blocking delay(5000) splash with non-blocking state machine
- Fix strip.isUpdating() guard to prevent display stalling
- Remove direct btnPin[]/buttonType[] modification; use configurable
buttonIndex with handleButton() instead
- Fix bootButtonPin config persistence
- Fix brightness graph off-by-one rendering bug
- Use getJsonValue() 3-arg form to prevent config defaults drift
- Migrate to v0.16.x usermod format (REGISTER_USERMOD, custom_usermods,
appendConfigData with oappend)
- Assign USERMOD_ID 59 (next available on main)
Adds the OLED_72x40 WLED usermod. It initializes an OLED splash and dashboard, supports inactivity sleep and wake events, and exposes display and LED settings. The change also adds a usermod ID, a library manifest, and setup documentation.

- Add setupFailed flag to avoid persisting init failures in the
enabled config setting (which would silently disable the usermod
on next config save)
- Deallocate heartbeat LED pin on u8g2->begin() failure to prevent
pin leak
- Move loop() early-return guard above heartbeat code so GPIO is
not driven when usermod failed to initialize
- Remove unrelated audioreactive from README custom_usermods example
Separate ledPin (persisted config value) from activeLedPin (runtime
allocation state). Previously, ledPin was set to -1 on allocation
failure, which caused addToConfig() to persist -1 and erase the
user's configured heartbeat pin.
Add pinMode(activeLedPin, INPUT) before PinManager::deallocatePin()
in both failure/reconfig paths so the pin is not left electrically
driven after release.
- Reset lastInteraction when splash ends so the dashboard isn't
immediately blanked if sleepTimeout < 5 seconds
- Handle enabled->disabled transition in readFromConfig: power-save
the display, release and tristate the heartbeat LED pin
- Guard LED pin reallocation with enabled check so pins aren't
allocated when usermod is disabled
Saving config triggers a state change event which was waking the
display immediately after the teardown disabled it. Add the same
enabled/setupFailed/initDone guards to onStateChange() and
handleButton() so they are no-ops when the usermod is disabled.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
When the usermod is disabled, activeLedPin is cleared. If re-enabled
without changing the configured pin, the reallocation condition
(oldLedPin != ledPin) was false, leaving the heartbeat permanently off.
Now also triggers when ledPin is configured but activeLedPin is unset.
readFromConfig() never reset lastInteraction or left the OFF state, so
saving settings while the panel was asleep showed nothing, and
re-enabling the usermod after a live disable stayed blank until the
next interaction. Wake the panel on a successful config read, using the
same guard as the other wake paths.
Signed-off-by: doccaz <erico.mendonca@gmail.com>
Addressed in dbe3b5b. readFromConfig() now wakes the panel after a successful config read: it resets lastInteraction, forces a redraw, and leaves the OFF state. This covers both a settings save while the panel is asleep and re-enabling the usermod after a live disable.
Two differences from the suggested diff:
The wake is guarded with enabled && !setupFailed && initDone && u8g2, matching onStateChange() and handleButton(), so a display that failed setup isn't powered on.
The target state is DASHBOARD. The ON state in the prompt doesn't exist in the DisplayState enum.
One side effect: since the core calls readFromConfig() on every settings save, any save now wakes the panel. Not yet built or tested on hardware.

In WLED v17 (current main), Network was renamed to WLEDNetwork because the new espressif framework already has an object called Network and we has to use a different name.
Thanks, fixed in bc5d42c. Network → WLEDNetwork at both call sites, and the comment now reads "Usermod Preferences". esp32c3dev_oled72x40 builds cleanly against current main (17.0.0-devV5); not yet re-tested on hardware.
Share the config defaults between the member initializers and the
readFromConfig() fallbacks, and replace the repeated framebuffer, panel
and dashboard layout literals with static constexpr names. No functional
change; the built firmware size is unchanged.
Addressed both CodeRabbit nitpicks in 9fc7926: the config defaults are now shared constants used by the member initializers and the readFromConfig() fallbacks, and the framebuffer/panel/dashboard layout literals are named static constexpr values. No functional change; esp32c3dev_oled72x40 builds with identical flash usage (1323710 bytes). Not yet re-tested on hardware.

## Usermods
### Pin ownership via `pinManager`
#### I2C (Wire) and SPI busses
- Don't allocate `Wire` I2C pins to the usermod - it would cause a pin conflict, as global I2C pins are already allocated to `PinOwner::HW_I2C`.
Read ledPin into a wider integer and accept only -1 or a valid output
GPIO, keeping the previous value otherwise, so out-of-range JSON values
cannot wrap into a real pin. Clamp sleepTimeout before the seconds to
milliseconds conversion to avoid 32-bit overflow.
Signed-off-by: doccaz <erico.mendonca@gmail.com>
ledPin is now read into an int32_t and accepted only if it is -1 or passes PinManager::isPinOk(pin, true). Otherwise the previous value is kept and the config is flagged incomplete, so an out-of-range value can no longer wrap into a real GPIO.
sleepTimeout is clamped to 4294966 s before the * 1000, so the millisecond value can't overflow a 32-bit unsigned long.
esp32c3dev_oled72x40 builds cleanly against current main. I flashed it to the board and tested both fixes on hardware with out-of-range values (ledPin outside the valid range, a very large sleepTimeout), and both are handled as described.
WLED invokes UsermodManager::handleButton(b) before normal button-state handling. The current callback resets lastInteraction on every eligible polling pass, including unpressed passes. This continually extends the inactivity deadline, so sleepTimeout cannot expire.
Suggested fix
if (!enabled || setupFailed || !initDone || !u8g2) return false;
if (b != buttonIndex) return false;
+ if (!isButtonPressed(b)) return false;
lastInteraction = millis();
if (displayState == OFF) {

Reject oversized ledPin values before conversion.
If ledPin is 2147483648, ArduinoJson 6 converts it to 0 for int32_t. getJsonValue() reports success because the field exists. The subsequent check can accept GPIO 0, so an invalid setting can drive and persist the wrong pin. Check that the present JSON value fits int32_t before calling getJsonValue(). (arduinojson.org)
As per path instructions, “Values retrieved at these ingress points are considered trusted only after the usermod itself has validated and range-clamped them.” This follows up the earlier invalid-ledPin review comment.
