Added a new effect called "Liquid", which is an addition of up to 16 sine waves of different wave lengths, frequencies, directions and offsets. Each wave is one of the first 2 colors. The third color is used for a 'shimmer' effect: when the wave is around a certain height, the shimmer color is blended in. The effect adds a good water/lava simulation I could not manage with existing effects.

The effect parameters and calculations are described in more detail in the code comments.

Tested:
✅ Code compiles (esp32dev)
✅ Effect works as intended
✅ Did not break anything
✅ Tested on ESP32 + SK8612/WS2814 RGBW

AI assistance: yes

  • What AI drafted: effect code based on my own sine wave logic/math
  • What I verified: the logic, line by line (I understand it) the effect on ESP32 + WS2814 RGBW
  • Unsure about: well color bit shifts, typecasts

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added the Liquid lighting effect, featuring traveling waves in primary and secondary colors with adjustable motion, wave count, and shimmer. A tertiary-color blend is available for shimmer.

11018-11033: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Per-pixel sin_t loop costs up to 15 float sine calls per LED per frame.

For each pixel the inner loop runs waves iterations, and each iteration calls sin_t(phase) with float math. On a long strip, such as 300 LEDs, this means about 4500 calls per frame. This is slow on ESP8266 and on RISC-V targets without an FPU. The effect is not in a pixel set/get hot path, so this is not a rule violation.

Precompute these per-frame values outside the pixel loop:

  • twoPi * LIQ_FREQ[k] * t + LIQ_PHI[k]
  • twoPi * LIQ_CYCLES[k] * cscale * LIQ_DIR[k] / len

Keep the inner loop to one multiply-add and one sine. Alternatively, use the fixed-point sin16_t.

11056-11062: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

The shimmer and final color blend can produce out-of-range channel values, and the cast of a possibly negative float to unsigned is risky.

r, g and b are amplitude-weighted averages of primary and secondary. Each weight is the sum of w*bri for its wave group, and each bri is at most 1. Only half the waves feed each group, so primary + secondary is at most ampSum. r therefore stays at or below 255. The value is non-negative. The risk is low, but the + 0.5f rounding can still reach 255.5 from rounding noise and then wrap through the uint8_t conversion. Clamp the result to 255 before the cast, for example with min(255u, ...).

The setPixelColor(int, byte, byte, byte, byte) overload also takes byte parameters, so unsigned arguments narrow implicitly. Use an explicit uint8_t cast after clamping.

10974-10981: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

The wave tables are static const float arrays in flash (ESP8266: RAM) without PROGMEM.

Four 16-entry float tables take 256 bytes. On ESP8266 these live in RAM unless you mark them PROGMEM. Reads then need pgm_read_float. The project guidelines also ask for static const char[] PROGMEM for repeated strings only. This is a minor RAM cost, so treat it as optional.

Learning: In WLED effect/overlay implementations (C++ under wled00), ensure effects operate through the SEGMENT.* read/write APIs for their own pixels/overlay state. Reserve global frame reads/writes like strip.getPixelColor* for copy_* style post-processing only. Do not manually composite/blend across lower layers inside the effect; segment-to-segment blending is handled later by WS2812FX::blendSegment(), so effects should produce their per-segment contributions without trying to composite with underlying layers themselves.

I like the looks, its a great addition to "ambient effects" like aurora and color clouds.
The coding on the other hand is very questionable. In general, avoid any look up tables and replace them with logic if possible. Also this runs awfully slow, I only get 14FPS and that is on a ESP32, on a C3 or ESP8266 this will deminish into a slide show.
To persue this further:

  • get rid of the LUT's or at least some of them
  • no use of floats in hot loops, no floats at all if possible
  • make sure this gets at least 50FPS at 2000 LEDs on ESP32
  • make use of palettes

you don't need to add const to all variables that are only computed once. It does not make a difference for the compiler (=not any faster). That's why in this repo, we prefer to not use const unless it really makes a difference.

optimization: for more speed, try to move parts of this long computation out of the inner loop. For example, these parts of the above expression are not depending on k:

Make the sixteenth wave selectable.

When SEGMENT.intensity is 255, integer division sets waves to 15. The effect never uses table entry 15, although its description promises up to 16 waves. Adjust the mapping so 0 remains off and 255 selects 16 waves. As per path instructions, “VERIFY numerical stability / accuracy of arithmetic expressions.”

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the RGBW white channel.

If a selected color uses only its white channel, these expressions extract zero for every channel. The Liquid effect then renders that color as black, including on RGBW strips. Extract and blend the white channel with RGB, then pass all four channels to SEGMENT.setPixelColor.

Update the primary, secondary, and tertiary color extraction in the Liquid
effect to preserve each color’s white channel alongside its RGB channels, blend
white consistently with RGB, and pass all four channels to SEGMENT.setPixelColor
so white-only colors render correctly on RGBW strips.

@softhack007 SEGCOLOR(x) returns four 8-bit color components, packed into a uint32_t as 0xWWRRGGBB:

Bits Component Extraction
31–24 White W(SEGCOLOR(x))
23–16 Red R(SEGCOLOR(x))
15–8 Green G(SEGCOLOR(x))
7–0 Blue B(SEGCOLOR(x))

In wled00/FX.h, the macro calls Segment::getCurrentColor(x). The packing and extraction macros are defined in wled00/colors.h.

NUM_COLORS == 3 means three color slots per segment, not three components per color.

The Liquid code extracts only RGB. It therefore discards the white component. A white-only color such as 0xFF000000 produces zero for all three extracted channels.

@coderabbitai please check if any of the variables in this PR shadows a global, segment-level or another local variable.

@softhack007 I checked the current PR diff and mode_liquid(). I found one shadowing case.

  • Global variable: const float bri in wled00/FX.cpp, Line 11070, shadows the global byte bri in wled00/wled.h, Line 619. The local variable holds wave brightness from 0 to 1. The global variable holds WLED brightness from 0 to 255.

Rename the local variable to waveBri and update its three uses:

    const float waveBri = 0.5f + 0.5f * sin_t(phase);

    Use waveBri in secondary += w * waveBri, primary += w * waveBri, and briSum += waveBri.

  • Segment-level variables: I found no shadowing. mode_liquid() is a free function. Segment members are accessed through SEGMENT, so local declarations do not hide those members.

  • Other local variables: I found no nested declaration that hides an enclosing local variable.

The local now at Line 11054 shares its name with WS2812FX::now, but it does not shadow that member. The code accesses the member explicitly as strip.now.

This check used source inspection, not a compiler -Wshadow check.

Length of output: 12108

@softhack007 The metadata string at Line 11114 is consistent with the effect code.

Metadata control Code field Default Result at default
Speed SEGMENT.speed 128 Time scale ≈ 1.004
Waves SEGMENT.intensity 128 8 active waves
Wavelength SEGMENT.custom1 128 Spatial scale ≈ 2.49
Shimmer Height SEGMENT.custom2 227 Center brightness ≈ 0.890
Shimmer Width SEGMENT.custom3 10 Band half-width ≈ 0.097

The remaining fields also match:

  • ;!,!,!; exposes all three color controls used by the effect.
  • The empty palette field hides the palette control. The effect does not use palettes.
  • The empty capability field defaults to 1 in the UI, which identifies a 1-D effect.
  • The defaults appear after the final semicolon, as required by extractModeDefaults().

Two code comments do not match the implementation:

  • The effect supports at most 15 waves, not 16: 255 / 16 == 15.
  • Shimmer Width reaches 0.30, not 0.20, at slider value 31.

Optionally, make the 1-D flag explicit and label the color controls by role:

static const char _data_FX_MODE_LIQUID[] PROGMEM =
  "Liquid@Speed,Waves,Wavelength,Shimmer Height,Shimmer Width;Primary,Secondary,Shimmer;;1;sx=128,ix=128,c1=128,c2=227,c3=10";

This is a clarity improvement, not a required metadata fix.
