fix: Preallow esbuild build when installing Storybook - #521
This mirrors the change we're making to Storybook itself, to preapprove the build of esbuild for PNPM users. Storybook has a hard dependency on esbuild at the moment and so users have to approve that build to use Storybook.
Alternatively, I'm happy to change the TanStack CLI to include a manual approval step (with a clean exit on user refusal to build esbuild, and whatever changes you deem relevant for non-interactive invocations of the CLI).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
React and Solid projects can now use Rsbuild as an alternative to the default Vite build tool, including router-only projects.
The CLI supports selecting a build tool interactively or with --build-tool rsbuild; available add-ons and toolchains reflect the selected build tool.
Storybook setup now allows the esbuild build script to run when using pnpm.
Add-on and starter commands can specify build scripts that pnpm is allowed to run.
Documentation
Added Rsbuild setup guidance and examples to the CLI reference and quick-start materials.

Walkthrough
The CLI and create package add Rsbuild support for React and Solid scaffolds, including bundler selection, validation, templates, package configuration, and tests. The change also adds pnpm-version-aware build approvals and workspace configuration, and updates generated examples, documentation, and release metadata.
Framework definitions expose Vite and Rsbuild, with Vite as the default. The CLI adds --build-tool, resolves and validates the selection, applies Rsbuild option restrictions, and filters add-ons by bundler.
Tests cover bundler selection and generated projects, including Rsbuild smoke tests and worker/edge parity. CLI references, scaffold guidance, changelogs, and alias package versions are updated.

Summary
Define and translate build approval options packages/create/src/types.ts, packages/create/src/package-manager.ts, packages/create/tests/package-manager.test.ts
Add-on commands can declare allowBuilds. For pnpm versions 10.2 and later, command translation adds one --allow-build=<package> flag per allowed package.
Wire approvals into create and add-to-app flows packages/create/src/create-app.ts, packages/create/src/edge-create-app.ts, packages/create/src/add-to-app.ts, packages/create/src/pnpm-workspace.ts, packages/create/src/frameworks/react/add-ons/storybook/info.json, packages/create/tests/pnpm-command-version.test.ts, packages/create/tests/pnpm-workspace.test.ts, .changeset/storybook-pnpm-allow-build.md
Create flows obtain the pnpm version when needed and pass approval lists to command translation. Workspace handling merges build approvals and updates eligible standalone .npmrc files. Storybook allows the esbuild build script.
Generated chat endpoints validate and pass thread IDs. Assistant components subscribe through useSyncExternalStore, and example links use route parameters. Strapi and other add-on templates receive dependency, validation, and type updates.
Project creation can stop when pnpm version detection fails, and the CLI change adds a lint error. These are bounded issues to address or explicitly accept before merging; older pnpm versions retain the plain command.

The title "fix: Preallow esbuild build when installing Storybook" matches the main change. The changeset and code add command-specific pnpm --allow-build=esbuild approvals for the Storybook add-on, with version gating at pnpm 10.2 and newer. The title is short, specific, and states the primary change. It omits the version-aware planning, but that detail is not required.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #499 requires that the pnpm 11+ create flow with the Storybook add-on does not stall on the esbuild approve-builds prompt. The issue's first suggested fix is to run pnpm as pnpm --allow-build=esbuild dlx storybook init -y --no-dev. Evidence in the reviewed summary: the Storybook add-on info.json now declares allowBuilds for esbuild; translateExecuteCommand forwards allowBuilds and the pnpm version; getPackageManagerExecuteCommand emits --allow-build=esbuild before dlx for pnpm 10.2.0 or later. The create and add-to-app paths forward the setting. pnpm-command-version.test.ts covers pnpm 9.15.5, 10.1.0, 10.2.0, and 11.22.0. The PR comment reports successful cold-cache Storybook initialization on those versions. Older pnpm versions keep plain dlx, which the issue does not require. The issue reports pnpm 11.18.0. That version falls in the covered >= 10.2.0 rule, but the verified runs used 11.22.0. The second suggested fix (pausing the spinner) is not implemented. The issue lists visibility or flag passing as alternatives, so this does not fail the requirement. The two unused React imports in generated Storybook examples are a baseline typecheck issue, not a #499 requirement. Uncertainty: the result depends on the AI summary and PR comment. Test output was not inspected directly.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR description scopes this change to preapproving the esbuild build for pnpm users. The whole-PR summary shows many changes that do not implement #499. Concrete examples: (1) Rsbuild bundler support: build-tools.ts, --build-tool CLI option, bundler in types.ts, options.ts, command-line.ts, cli.ts, ui-prompts.ts, bundler-specific Vite/Rsbuild templates and package manifests, and related tests (bundlers.test.ts, rsbuild-smoke.spec.ts). (2) React and Solid router refactors: main.tsx.ejs, router.tsx.ejs, and the getRouter factory changes. (3) AI, events, and resume example changes: thread IDs, route paths, useSyncExternalStore in RemyAssistant and ResumeAssistant, and API threadId validation. (4) Unrelated dependency and content changes: Strapi zod and .validator changes, t3env z.url(), Sentry link change, Biome schema upgrade, and the @content-collections/core upgrade. (5) Release artifacts: version bumps for @tanstack/create (0.70.1 to 0.71.10), @tanstack/cli, and the cli-aliases packages, plus many changelog entries. (6) Other unrelated fixes: the edge-template-file.ts newline behavior and the append-separators tests. The pnpm allow-build path, the pnpm version lookup, the ExecuteCommandOptions type, the Storybook add-on info.json change, the changeset, and the related command-version tests do implement #499. Build-approval items for partner add-ons and the pnpm workspace or .npmrc merge are adjacent. Their link to #499 is not shown and needs justification.
Resolution
Remove the unrelated changes from this pull request, or move them to separate pull requests with their own linked issues. Keep the Storybook allowBuilds declaration, the pnpm --allow-build command translation with its version rule, the create and add-to-app propagation of allowBuilds and the pnpm version, the related tests, and the changeset. Revert the release version bumps and generated changelog entries. Justify or remove the partner add-on onlyBuiltDependencies, pnpm workspace merge, and .npmrc changes, unless they are required for the Storybook esbuild approval path.

We've had to handle quite a lot of edge cases with this approach on the Storybook side PR. So I know I need to make changes to this PR but would love to hear back from maintainers about whether the approach is acceptable or not, before investing the time.
Thanks for working through the Storybook setup. Command-specific approvals make sense here, with a compatibility check for older pnpm versions before this lands.
AI review notes:
Command-specific approvals are the right place to handle pnpm dlx, since its temporary install does not inherit the generated project's workspace approval policy. The project-level approvals added separately do not replace this change.
One compatibility requirement needs handling before landing: the plain --allow-build option is accepted starting in pnpm 10.2.0. I checked actual pnpm 9.15.5, 10.1.0, 10.2.0 and 11.22.0 with a local, harmless two-package registry fixture. Versions 9.15.5 and 10.1.0 reject the option before running the command. Versions 10.2.0 and 11.22.0 run the approved dependency's install script, while their plain dlx control leaves it unbuilt. The generic --config.allow-build=... form is not a compatible substitute, it fails because the parsed value is a string rather than the expected array.
The implementation should check the selected pnpm version before adding this option and keep command planning consistent for create and add-to-existing-app flows. It should also retain the shared edge/memory command-planning path. The fixture establishes flag and approval behavior, it does not establish whether a real Storybook/esbuild install fails on every older pnpm version, so that still needs an actual standalone Storybook install check.
Thanks for working on this! The update keeps the older pnpm command working and adds the version-aware handling to existing projects too.
AI review notes:
The agent reproduced #499 with public CLI 0.72.10, pnpm 11.22.0, a real terminal and a cold dlx cache. It stopped at esbuild's build-approval prompt before Storybook started.
The candidate uses the selected pnpm binary's version, adds --allow-build=esbuild from pnpm 10.2 onward, and retains plain dlx for older or unknown versions. Node and edge planning share the same boundary, and add-to-app planning uses one version for both command lists.
Actual cold-cache Storybook initialization completed without input on pnpm 9.15.5, 10.1.0, 10.2.0 and 11.22.0. Their frozen installs, app builds and Storybook static builds passed. A separate actual create-then-add flow on pnpm 11 also completed with the expected flag. The generated Storybook artifact rendered and handled clicks in the browser.
Two unused React imports still fail typechecking in Storybook's generated Button and Header examples. The same two errors and byte-identical files reproduce with the unchanged public CLI baseline. Those baseline failures are recorded separately from this fix's results.
Update pushed as 2433f530, preserving the original contribution and current main. The normal local commit hook passed the full build/type checks, 506 unit tests and all eight configured Chrome blocking tests. Hosted checks are now running on that exact commit. The fix has not merged or released yet.

Handle failed or invalid pnpm version detection in edge createApp.
When a selected pnpm command has allowBuilds, the lookup runs after files are written. A rejecting provider can therefore abort project creation before git initialization, dependency installation, and add-on commands.
A resolved but malformed version has a separate failure path. getPackageManagerExecuteCommand throws Invalid pnpm version when it receives that value. Do not assume that a Corepack notice appears on stdout; any provider output that does not match the accepted version pattern has this effect.
Treat both cases as an unknown version. This preserves the existing plain pnpm dlx fallback.

Catch pnpm --version failures and return undefined.
getPackageManagerVersion calls execa without error handling, so any failure rejects. The callers in create-app.ts (Line 180) and add-to-app.ts (Line 376) do not catch it.
Callers run the probe whenever pnpm is selected and an add-on or starter declares allowBuilds. This includes install: false. If pnpm is not on PATH, createApp now aborts with an ENOENT error after it has written files. Before this change, the only failure was the Storybook command. execute catches that failure and records it in errors.
The packageManagerVersion docs in package-manager.ts say unknown versions fall back to plain dlx. A failed probe should follow that fallback. Return undefined on failure.

Good catch on the version-probe errors. A follow-up is under validation, and the release will wait for it.
AI review notes:
Five regression cases fail on the merged implementation: failed or malformed detection can abort Node and edge generation, and the default environment rejects an unavailable version probe. All five pass in the follow-up candidate, with 29 focused tests and the full build passing.
The candidate treats detection as advisory in Node, edge and add-to-app flows, using plain pnpm dlx when detection fails or returns an invalid value. Explicitly supplied target versions still receive strict validation. The normal full commit hook is running, and normal CI/review must pass before the version release proceeds.
The unrelated options.ts note came from the PR's stale base comparison. Refreshing its existing main base through the normal API reduced the diff from 134 files to the actual 11 reviewed files. No branch protection or check was bypassed.
This is released in @tanstack/cli@0.72.11, including the probe fallback fix in #545. Thanks for getting the Storybook fix started!
AI review notes:
All seven published archives passed downloaded integrity, binary and internal dependency-pin checks. The published engine 0.71.11 matches the tested compiled fix, and all eight version/release tags point to the version commit.
The actual public CLI completed Storybook creation with a cold pnpm 11.22 cache in a real terminal, without approval input. Frozen install, client/SSR build and Storybook static build passed. Both generated button stories rendered and clicked with no browser page errors. The published engine also passed 25 Node, edge and add-to-app probe cases, plus the default unavailable-probe check. No deployment providers were called.
The generated Storybook TypeScript check still reports the two pre-existing unused React imports in Button.tsx and Header.tsx, already reproduced on the prior public release. This is not a claim that generated-app type checking is clean.

Closes #499.
This mirrors the change we're making to Storybook itself, to preapprove the build of
esbuildfor PNPM users. Storybook has a hard dependency onesbuildat the moment and so users have to approve that build to use Storybook.Alternatively, I'm happy to change the TanStack CLI to include a manual approval step (with a clean exit on user refusal to build
esbuild, and whatever changes you deem relevant for non-interactive invocations of the CLI).Summary by CodeRabbit
