fix(create): tolerate unavailable pnpm version probes - #545
An optional pnpm version probe can currently stop project generation when the command fails or returns malformed output. Treat those results as unknown so Node, edge and add-to-app flows retain the compatible plain pnpm dlx command. Explicitly supplied target versions still receive strict validation.
Follow-up to #521, required before releasing #544.
AI review notes:
Five regression cases fail on the merged implementation and pass with this change. The normal local commit hook passed the full build/type checks, 511 unit tests and all eight configured Chrome blocking tests. The original four-version Storybook controls remain applicable to valid version detection, which is unchanged.
No dependencies, lockfiles, workflows, global build approvals or test gates changed. The version PR remains a draft until this follow-up passes normal hosted checks and review and merges.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
App creation and add-on installation now continue with the standard pnpm dlx command when an optional pnpm version check fails or returns an invalid version.
Node and edge flows now handle unavailable or malformed version results consistently. Valid pnpm versions that support build approval continue to use the appropriate build flag.
The change adds validated pnpm version detection. Failed or malformed probes return no version. The Node, edge, and add-to-app flows use the detector when resolving pnpm’s version for build approval.

Summary
Version detection and fallback contract packages/create/src/types.ts, packages/create/src/environment.ts, packages/create/src/package-manager.ts, packages/create/tests/environment.test.ts, packages/create/tests/pnpm-command-version.test.ts
The environment returns undefined when the version command fails. The shared detector accepts only matching SemVer strings. Tests cover unavailable probes and pnpm command handling for invalid and valid version strings.
The three flows use the shared detector when resolving pnpm’s version. The changeset records a patch release for @tanstack/create and describes the fallback behavior.
TanStack/cli#521: Adds the pnpm version-aware build-approval path that this change updates.

Explanation
The title "fix(create): tolerate unavailable pnpm version probes" matches the main change. The changeset, package-manager, environment, and add-to-app/create-app/edge-create-app changes all treat failed or malformed optional pnpm version probes as unknown, so the command stays as plain pnpm dlx. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix. It does not cover the stricter SemVer validation for supplied versions, but that is a secondary aspect.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Reject malformed version suffixes.
The pattern accepts 10.2.0- and 10.2.0+build warning. For either probe result, command planning adds --allow-build instead of using plain pnpm dlx. A pnpm version without that flag can then fail setup. Validate the complete version suffix and add near-miss tests. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The suffix finding reproduces, so this stays in draft while the stricter validation finishes.
AI review notes:
Eight Node and edge cases fail on the current PR head for malformed suffixes, including 10.2.0- and 10.2.0+build warning. The local update uses complete SemVer syntax without adding a dependency, and all 36 focused planning cases pass, including valid prerelease and build metadata.
The updated normal hook has passed the build/type and 527 unit checks and completed all eight Chrome assertion bodies. Its natural shutdown is still pending, so the new commit has not been pushed yet. This draft and the release draft are technical holds, with no new owner approval needed.
The stricter version validation is pushed and this is ready for review.
AI review notes:
Commit 46800878 rejects malformed version suffixes and keeps valid prerelease and build metadata, without adding a dependency. All 36 focused cases pass. The unmodified normal hook completed naturally with build/type checks, 527 unit tests and all eight configured Chrome e2e cases passing.
Hosted unit, blocking e2e, provenance and security checks are green on that exact head. The updated CodeRabbit review is still running. The version PR remains in draft until this fix is reviewed and merged, then the normal release and public artifact checks can proceed.
The addToApp probe at packages/create/src/add-to-app.ts:375-377 now goes through detectPnpmVersion. That helper returns undefined for a thrown, malformed, or non-string result. No test in describe('addToApp') overrides environment.getPackageManagerVersion. The createApp tests exercise the shared helper but not this call site, and the runNewCommands test bypasses the probe. A change that reintroduces an unguarded probe call at this site would not fail any addToApp test.
Add a test in describe('addToApp') with a pnpm project and an add-on that declares allowBuilds. Set environment.getPackageManagerVersion to throw, then to return a malformed value, then to return 10.2.0. Assert that addToApp resolves in the throw and malformed cases. Assert the expected install command form for the valid case. Confirm the exact fixture fields before writing the assertions.

allowBuilds, verify addToApp resolves when environment.getPackageManagerVersion
throws or returns a malformed value, and verify the expected install command
when it returns a valid version. Use the existing fixture fields and command

* fix: add pnpm build approvals for `sharp` and `workerd` in Cloudflare deployment add-on
When using pnpm v11, creating a Cloudflare-deployed project fails because

scripts that are not listed in `pnpm.onlyBuiltDependencies`.
Add these entries to both the React and Solid Cloudflare host `package.json.ejs`
templates so they are merged with the base approvals at project creation time.
