### Using IDs as values

When your app stores IDs instead of item objects, wrap the data with `Combobox.createItems`. `getValue` returns the value that `value` and `onValueChange` use. `getLabel` returns the text shown in the input and used for filtering. Pass a function as the child of `Combobox.Content` to render each item that matches the input.

Create the collection at module scope for static data. For data that changes, wrap it in `React.useMemo` keyed by the data.

🌐 Web query:

official Base UI v1.8.0 Combobox createItems ItemCollection Root items type

💡 Result:

For **`@base-ui/react` v1.8.0**, the official release notes confirm that `Combobox.createItems` was added in that release. ([base-ui.com](https://base-ui.com/react/overview/releases/v1-8-0?utm_source=openai))

The current official Combobox docs describe the relevant types as:

- `Combobox.Root.Props<Value, Multiple, Item>` — `Value` is the selected value type; `Item` is the source/rendered item type.
- `items` accepts a flat or grouped list, or `ComboboxItemCollection<Item, Value>`.
- `createItems(data, options)` returns `ComboboxItemCollection<Item, ComboboxPrimitiveValue>`. `data` is source items (flat or grouped), optionally `undefined`; `options` provides `getValue` and `getLabel` accessors. ([base-ui.com](https://base-ui.com/react/components/combobox?utm_source=openai))

So with object records and ID selection, use `Item = Record` and `Value = ID`; render the record, but set `<Combobox.Item value={record.id}>`.

**Version caveat:** the detailed type signatures above come from the current docs, not a v1.8.0-pinned declaration. The release notes establish the API’s arrival in v1.8.0, but the sources retrieved here don’t verify whether those exact signatures were unchanged in that version. ([base-ui.com](https://base-ui.com/react/overview/releases/v1-8-0?utm_source=openai))

🌐 Web query:

site:github.com/mui/base-ui/tree/v1.8.0 packages/react/src/combobox itemCollection.ts ComboboxRoot items ItemCollection

💡 Result:

Your query appears to point to a path that may not match the v1.8.0 source layout: the `ComboboxRoot` file surfaced in the repository is under `packages/react/src/combobox/root/ComboboxRoot.tsx`, not directly under `combobox`. The search did not establish whether `itemCollection.ts` exists at the v1.8.0 tag. ([github.com](https://github.com/mui/base-ui/blob/master/packages/react/src/combobox/root/ComboboxRoot.tsx?utm_source=openai))

The current Combobox documentation describes `items` and `createItems()`, but it does not verify how those work in v1.8.0. ([base-ui.com](https://base-ui.com/react/components/combobox?utm_source=openai))

Include the createItems collection in the documented items type.

Combobox.createItems returns an opaque collection that Combobox.Root.items accepts. The declaration currently permits only arrays, so it excludes the documented ID-based usage.

Update the documented items type in the Combobox props declaration to accept the
opaque collection returned by Combobox.createItems, in addition to arrays, so it
reflects the ID-based usage accepted by Combobox.Root.items.

Check that entry.items is an array before treating the entry as a group.

If an item has items: 3, selecting the item in a multiple combobox makes getItemLabel iterate 3 and throws during chip rendering. Base UI 1.8 accepts this item shape and identifies groups with Array.isArray(item.items). Use the same check here. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep chip labels consistent with the root’s label rules.

If a selected ID is absent from the collection and itemToStringLabel supplies its label, this fallback displays the raw ID on the chip. Base UI uses itemToStringLabel for unresolved values and applies isItemEqualToValue when resolving collection values. Pass those rules through the chip lookup so both displays use the same label.
